5/8¿ Ultimate Skew With this tool added to my larger skew you have a complete set to do just about anything connected with between center work. This size is wonderful for powerful work in harder woods, with less chatter and flex than many traditional skews (especially oval skews!). The steel starts at 1/2" thick and tapers to about 5/16" thick at the edge. The edge profile is one that I have popularized--not a full radiused edge skew as some believe. It has a straight section and then breaks into a curve. The long corners behind the short point are transformed into a full rounded shape (great for rolling and gliding on the tool rest--thus simplifying some of the more difficult cuts with the skew) while the area behind the long point remains flat but with the corners softened. I personally turn each handle, fix the steel into the wood and produce a nasty, wicked sharp edge (ground, hand-honed and power-honed). Comes with a solid stainless steel ferrule. Woods for the handle are Osage orange, blackened white oak and cocobolo. As with all skews, do not use for face-grain bowl turning.
