Alan's favorite sized skew designed and produced by Alan himself. Made from powdered M4 high speed steel with a choice of handles.
This is the dream skew I have worked on for several years. It has the look and feel of older skews that were drawn out from hot metal to produce a rigid, heavy tool but with a taper to the edge. These are milled to produce that effect: a strong and rigid backbone to the skew but better balance than if the same thickness throughout. The thickest area is 1/2" at the handle end tapering to around 5/16" at the edge. The edge shape is one that I have popularized that I find quite versatile over a traditional grind. The steel is my personal favorite--great edge holding properties and one that responds quickly to honing with diamond. The steel is a true high speed steel, powdered metal made in the U.S., triple tempered with a cryogenic treatment between the first and second tempers. I personally turn each handle, fix the steel into the handle and produce a "wicked sharp edge" to the tool. Comes with a solid stainless steel ferrule. This tool comes ready to put onto wood--something very rare when purchasing tools. This skew is offered in two different woods: Osage orange and Florida rosewood (which is in fact Indian rosewood, and holds it color far better than cocobolo rosewood).
As with all skews, do not use for your face-grain bowl turning.

When I first seen the Uber Skew (just looking on Alan's website) I wasn't sure would this skew be worth the money, I had my doubts... until it arrived in the mail, it's now my bread and butter, a true favorite, from the handle (turned by Alan) with the skull and crossbones with Alan’s his signature on the bottom of the skew, it’s an amazing tool, one of the best tool purchases I have ever made.

I am a beginner wood turner and a fellow wood turner told me about this skew. I use it for both roughing and finishing. It is everything I was informed it would be and quite honestly, more. Tremendous skew that although is visually somewhat overwhelming, is really quite easy to handle and have no regrets in my purchase. Thank you Alan for a truly remarkable tool. 10 out of 10!!

I first learned how to turn about four years ago. My instructor suggested I follow up my lessons with buying Alan Lacer's DVD's on using a skew Chisel. I did and am very happy I did so. As the instructor said: "Once you learn the skew chisel you will like it better than the rest of your tools". I have used a 1/2 and 1 inch skew for four years. I just purchased Alan Lacer's Uber/Ultimate Skew. It's a superior product in overall design, quality of steel and weight. The difference between my 1 inch skew from the UK and this 1&3/8 inch skew are like day and night. I still have to use my small skews, but my "go to skew" is this one. I didn't have any cocobolo to make my own handle so I paid extra to have Alan make it. I'm glad I did. The handle is long and well formed. I couldn't be happier.

Great skew. Great thickness to the cross section, eliminating vibration
