I call this my "box scraper" as it is rigid enough to handle end-grain hollowing in box making, goblets, end-grain bowls, etc. Unhandled. It is excellent for roughing out the interior of boxes, goblets, small end-grain bowls and the like. Used in a shear scraping mode with a fine, burnised burr you can get an extremely fine finish on end grain in such projects that involve end-grain hollowing.
This high speed steel scraper from Hamlet of Sheffield England is rigid and tough, being 3/8" thick and 1/2" wide. The overall length is 9.25", with the blade about 6.5" long.
I recommend you make a handle around 15 "to 16" in length (see www.alanlacer.com for an article on handle making--called "Forgotten Handles" under the "Articles section of my site).
