This is the largest of the spindle roughing gouges offered by Hamlet of Sheffield England, in a 1 3/4" version, without handle.
Although large, I use this size for everything from ink pens to porch columns. The larger the spindle roughing gouge the better you will find it will level a cut--wonderful for cylinders, tapers, shallow and wide concave or convex area. This is for work with the grain running parallel to the lathe bed--NOT FOR FACE-GRAIN BOWL TURNING! Using these types of gouges for such work can result in a bent or broken tool, with serious safety concerns. Overall length is 8.75", with the flute about 5.75" long.
This is 1 3/4" from the outside of one flute to the inside of the other (English method of measuring). I only offer this tool without a handle. I am a huge believer in making your own handles--read the article on my www.alanlaer.com site, under Articles: "Forgotten Handles."

Extra weight makes for much smoother roughing
I had previously been using a Hamlet 3/4" roughing gouge that weighs in at 12.6 oz. The blade alone of this 1-3/4" gouge weighs almost 19 oz., and with a weighted handle the completed tool weighs 44.6 oz., or about 3.5 times as much as the previous one. The extra weight really dampens vibrations while roughing and the large diameter makes for smaller ripples in the resulting turning. I can't comment on the edge-holding capability yet, but I think this will be my go to tool in the future.

A Serious Gouge
A large, heavy duty gouge. Just the ticket for initial rounding with no-nonsense. Does not chatter. Sharpens well. An outstanding tool
