A 3/8" gouge made from M2 high speed steel by Hamlet of Sheffield England. Comes with a stained European beech handle.
A gouge that goes by many names: spindle, detail, shallow, fingernail, contour or just plain "gouge." Whatever you wish to call it, this gouge is a workhorse in between center work for concave and convex cuts or for detailing in face-grain bowl turning--such as on rims, bases, feet, etc. This gouge is 3/8" across the flutes and comes with a nicely balanced handle for this size of gouge. I also offer an unhandled version of this tool.

Great spindle gouge with comfortable handle. I ordered this to replace the same one I bought four years ago and have used up. Beware, there is a need to fine tune the grind when it arrives. Also, Alan Lacer's rapid response with emails and prompt shipping is very impressive.

As per Alan's recommendation I ground a 30 degree angle and then put a fairly conservative fingernail on it. The shape has been perfect for tight coves. Keeps its edge, even with the 30 degree bevel.
Highly recommend it.

I have several woodturning tools from the Hamlet line. I love these tools. The large handle makes the grip easy. The steel is the best and holds its sharpness. I will continue to replace my old tools with the Hamlet line for years to come.
