Sold as a two-piece set, this driving system in a #2 Morse taper gives all of the benefits of the regular ring drive but with the ability to add a larger oustide ring. This allows for the turning of considerably larger work between centers. The larger outside ring can also be modified with shallow scollps along the outside rim to drive heavier and larger work. This combination of rings allows for first opertion on small to moderately sized bowl blanks.
On clean, solid wood (not into punky wood, bark or split wood) make a centering mark onto the blank. Next, drive the two-piece ring into the wood firmly using a deadblow mallet (never a hard-faced hammer). Mount the work between centers and determine the amount of drive by winding the tailstock firmly into the wood.
